The working principle of an illuminated tact switch is as follows:

An illuminated tact switch is an electronic component that integrates switch control and status indication. Its working principle can be divided into two core parts: switch triggering and light indication, which work both independently and in coordination. Here is a detailed explanation:

1. Working Principle of Switch Triggering (Core Control Function)

The switch part of an illuminated tact switch is essentially a micro-motion triggering structure, which realizes control based on the principle of mechanical contact and circuit on-off. The specific process is as follows:

  1. Initial State (Open)
    The switch contains fixed contacts (static contacts) and movable contacts (dynamic contacts). When not pressed, the dynamic contact is separated from the static contact under the elastic force of a spring or shrapnel, the circuit is in an open state, and the device does not work.
  2. Triggered State (Closed)
    When an external force (such as pressing the button with a finger) is applied, the button drives the internal shrapnel or push rod to move downward, making the dynamic contact touch the static contact. The circuit forms a path, and current is transmitted to the device through the switch, realizing functions such as starting up and adjusting.
  3. Reset State (Open)
    When the external force is removed, the elastic force of the shrapnel or spring resets the dynamic contact, separating it from the static contact again, the circuit is disconnected, and the switch returns to its initial state.
    This characteristic of "conducting when pressed and disconnecting when released" makes it a typical momentary contact switch, suitable for scenarios requiring temporary triggering (such as household appliance buttons, electronic device control, etc.).

2. Working Principle of Light Indication (Status Display Function)

Illuminated tact switches have a built-in LED (light-emitting diode), and their light indication function is independent of the on-off control of the switch, usually realized in the following two ways:

  1. Independent Power Supply Circuit
    The positive and negative poles of the LED are connected to the device's power supply or control circuit through separate pins, and are not affected by the on-off state of the switch itself. For example:
    • When the device is powered on, the LED can get current through an independent circuit and light up to indicate that the device is in "standby state", regardless of whether the switch is pressed;
    • When the switch is closed (the device is working), the LED may increase its brightness through another current path or switch color (such as red → green) to distinguish different working states.
  2. Associated with Switch State
    In some designs, the power supply circuit of the LED is associated with the main circuit of the switch:
    • When the switch is closed, the main circuit is powered on, and at the same time, the LED is powered, so the light is on (such as the indicator light is on when the device is working);
    • When the switch is open, the LED is powered off and goes out, intuitively reflecting the "stop state" of the device.
    The color (red, green, blue, yellow, etc.) and brightness of the LED can be adjusted through circuit design, and different colors usually correspond to different meanings (such as red representing standby and green representing working).

3. Overall Coordination Principle

The switch part and the LED part of the illuminated tact switch are connected to the device circuit through their respective pins. They can work independently (for example, the light is always on to indicate the power supply, and the switch controls the start and stop of the device) or work together (for example, the light is on when the switch is on, and off when the switch is off). This design not only retains the advantage of the tact switch being "easy to operate" but also intuitively feeds back the device state through light, reducing misoperation and improving user experience.

Summary

The core of an illuminated tact switch is "mechanical triggering to control circuit on-off + independent/associated status display by LED". It realizes the dual functions of control and indication through a simple structure, so it is widely used in electronic devices that require human-computer interaction.
